Pilgrimage to Saint Mary of Sion in Axum
Aksum is considered the religious capital of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church. But it is also the heart of ancient Ethiopia: there are numerous remains of monuments built between the 1st and 13th centuries. The site is included on the UNESCO World Heritage list.
Every year, at the end of November, Ethiopian Christians commemorate Saint Mary of Aksum. This event, also called Hidar Zion, is associated with the presence of the Ark of the Covenant secretly kept in Aksum.
Thousands of people attend this festival which is also one of the main pilgrimages in the country.
You will participate in this procession and parades in ceremonial clothing. This program allows you to discover the emblematic towns and sites of northern Ethiopia.
