The Ari people

Presentation

The Ari people live north of Mago National Park, around Jinka, and number 120,000 members. It is the tribe that has the largest territory in this area.

Their land is exceptionally green and fertile, which allows them to grow diverse crops such as cereals, coffee or fruits. They also harvest a lot of honey, which they often use as currency, and own many heads of cattle.

The Ari people

The members of the tribe have the habit of painting and scarifying their bodies. The women are famous for their pottery which they sell in the surrounding markets. The Ari's thatched-roof houses are decorated with beautiful murals. Painting is the activity of women while men devote themselves to agricultural work. The walls of the houses are covered with mud and then painted. The Ari speak the Hamer language.
