The Bena people

Presentation

The Bena people, located around Key Afar and up to the banks of the Weyto River, number around 40,000 individuals. They practice agriculture and hunting.
The Benna have obvious similarities with their Hamer cousins with whom they share their language, customs and beliefs. They engage in ritual dances and songs and celebrate the Ukuli or “cow jumping” ceremony.

Benna men often adorn themselves with a clay hairstyle decorated with feathers. As for the women, they coat their hair with butter and decorate it with pearls. During ritual festivals, both men and women decorate their bodies with clay or lime paint.

Children are known for their stilts, they put on a show on the road but above all they allow them to avoid snakes.
