Weekend to Harar

Harar, nicknamed the "Holy City" or the "City of Saints", is a historic city located in eastern Ethiopia. It is renowned for its narrow streets, traditional stone houses, ancient mosques and vibrant cultural ambiance.

Harar is known for its fortified wall, which was built in the 16th century to protect against invasions. Within its walls, visitors can discover a labyrinth of bustling alleyways, colorful markets and a captivating atmosphere reminiscent of a bygone era. It is also a town where a strange tradition takes place, that of feeding hyenas.

The city is also famous for its links to Islamic culture, home to more than 80 mosques, including the Grand Mosque of Jami, as well as historic sites such as the home of famous poet Arthur Rimbaud.

The main points

  • The holy city of Harar
